What GetYourGuide is
GetYourGuide is a Berlin-based online marketplace for tours, activities and attraction tickets. Founded in 2009, it now lists more than 150,000 experiences from over 20,000 supply partners worldwide. It does not run tours itself: every Rome listing belongs to a local operator (a licensed guide company, a bus operator, a cooking school) that sets its own price, cancellation terms and meeting point. GetYourGuide handles payment, vouchers, reviews and customer service, and takes a commission from the operator.
For Rome specifically it is the biggest shop window in the market. Its Rome hub covers Colosseum and Vatican tours, entry tickets, day trips to Pompeii and Tivoli, food tours in Trastevere, golf-cart and Vespa rides, hop-on hop-off buses and airport transfers.
How it works for Rome
Search on the Rome hub on GetYourGuide or filter by category, for example entry tickets only. Each listing shows a date picker, available time slots, the tour language, the meeting point and the cancellation rule. Timed products (Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Borghese Gallery) require a slot; untimed products (hop-on hop-off, most day passes) are valid for a date or a period.
After payment you receive a confirmation email and a mobile voucher in the app. Show the QR code at the meeting point or, for entry tickets, at the gate. Vouchers are stored offline in the app, which matters at the Colosseum, where the mobile signal drops inside the security area. Operators may email a separate official ticket the evening before (standard for Vatican fast-track entries), so check your inbox and spam folder before you leave the hotel.
Two features are worth knowing. “Reserve now, pay later” lets you hold a slot without paying until a few days before the date. And the review filter shows only verified bookings, which makes scores harder to game than on open review sites.

The verdict on parity is simple: if the official site has slots, it is always cheaper. The platform earns its keep when official slots have gone (Colosseum arena tickets vanish weeks ahead in high season), when you want a guide, or when you want everything for a trip in one account with one refund policy.
Cancellation and refunds
The default policy on most Rome listings is free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Cancel from “Bookings” in your account; the refund goes to the original payment method and typically shows within 3–7 business days depending on your bank. Some products — mostly Vatican fast-track entries, some Borghese slots and certain day trips — are marked non-refundable or carry a longer notice period. The rule is printed under the price on every listing, so read it before you pay.
If the operator cancels (strike, weather, a papal event closing the Vatican), you get a full refund or a rebooking. If a tour is materially different from the listing, raise it with support within a few days and keep photos; refunds in disputes are case by case.

- Day trips. Pompeii (with optional Vesuvius), Tivoli’s Villa d’Este and Hadrian’s Villa, and Amalfi coach trips are well covered with hotel or Termini pick-ups.
- Formats beyond the classics. Golf-cart tours, Vespa rides, Trastevere street-food tours and Borghese Gallery slots with audio guide are strong here and thin elsewhere.
- Depth of reviews. Tens of thousands of verified reviews per product make it easy to spot a decline in a specific operator’s quality.
Weak spots
- Plain entry tickets cost more than on the official site and often a few euros more than the same ticket on Tiqets.
- Search results mix guided tours, audio-guide “tickets” and combos; the word “skip-the-line” is used loosely. Read the inclusions.
- Meeting points are sometimes 5–10 minutes from the monument, which surprises people who expected to walk up to the gate.
- Because it is a marketplace, a bad experience with one operator can be resolved by GetYourGuide, but the guide will be different next time, not necessarily better.

Support is 24/7 by live chat in the app, phone and email, in English, Italian and several other languages. Response times are short for pre-trip questions.
