What Green Line Tours offers
Green Line Tours is a Roman coach company rather than a global sightseeing brand. Its head office is at Via Farini 16, on the Santa Maria Maggiore side of Termini station, and everything it sells starts within a few hundred metres of there: a hop-on hop-off open-top bus around the centre, a 90-minute night loop, half-day city tours by coach, and full-day excursions to Pompeii, Tivoli, Florence, Orvieto and Assisi and the Amalfi coast. It also sells Rome walking tours and Vatican packages through partner guides, which are not covered here.
The business model is price. Green Line undercuts Big Bus and City Sightseeing on the hop-on ticket and relies on an onboard assistant and single-use headphones rather than a fully integrated multilingual audio system, and its day trips are among the cheapest coach excursions from Rome. That positioning explains most of what the reviews say, good and bad.
The hop-on hop-off route
The route is the standard Rome loop that all three operators run, because the city licenses the same streets: Termini, Santa Maria Maggiore, the Colosseum, Circus Maximus, Piazza Venezia, the Vatican via Castel Sant’Angelo, Piazza Barberini and back to Termini, with about a dozen stops and a full circuit of roughly 90 minutes in traffic. The open upper deck gives the view; the lower deck has the wheelchair space and shade.
Tickets come in more shapes than the competition: a daily ticket (valid until the last bus of the day you first board), 24, 48 and 72-hour passes, and a one-run ticket for a single circuit without getting off. On Tiqets the entry price is €15 at our last check, with the longer options priced upwards; the official site lists 24 hours at €22, reduced to €20.90 on sale when checked. The night tour is a separate 90-minute product from Termini at 20:00, €23 on the official site and on Tiqets, looping the lit Colosseum, Piazza Venezia and Piazza Barberini; the Tiqets version builds in a dinner break at Eataly, which is a shopping-and-eating hall near Ostiense rather than a restaurant in the centre. Two honest observations. First, coach day trips to Pompeii and Florence are slower than the train (Naples in 70 minutes, Florence in 90) and Green Line’s advantage is price and having nothing to organise. Second, the sale prices on the official site are often lower than platform prices for the same trip, so check both before booking. Prices and group sizes
At our last check: hop-on hop-off from €15 (Tiqets) or €22 for 24 hours (official, €20.90 on sale); night tour €23; Pompeii €159 (€111.30 on sale); Orvieto and Assisi €179. Child prices exist on most products. Coaches carry 50–55 passengers on day trips, which is standard for the price band; small-group versions of the same trips cost two to three times more on GetYourGuide’s bus and minivan category.

On Tiqets, the Green Line hop-on hop-off ticket is rated 3.9 from 107 reviews and the night tour 3.6 from 18, at our last check. That places Green Line just above City Sightseeing’s 3.8 (from a far larger 1,306 reviews) and just below Big Bus’s 4.0 (125 reviews) on the same platform. Scores on Tripadvisor and Google are not quoted here.
The pattern in the written reviews is consistent across platforms:
- Praised: the price, friendly onboard assistants, the open-top view of the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia, and the ease of finding the Termini stop.
- Criticised: waiting times between buses at busy stops, Rome traffic making the loop slower than the timetable, headphones that do not always work, and confusion about where exactly the first stop is. These complaints apply, in varying degrees, to every Rome hop-on operator; traffic is the city’s problem, not Green Line’s.
For day trips, reviewers note long coach days and early starts, and value the guide on the Pompeii visit. Complaints centre on lunch stops at fixed restaurants and on the time spent on the road.

The verdict: Green Line for the lowest price and the one-run option; City Sightseeing for frequency; Big Bus for comfort and audio quality. Timing is everything
- Board the first bus of the morning at Termini for an empty upper deck; by 11:00 the Colosseum stop has queues.
- Traffic peaks 8:00–10:00 and 17:00–19:00; a loop that takes 90 minutes at noon can take two hours at 18:00.
- The night tour works best from late spring to early autumn, when 20:00 is still dusk and the ride ends in the dark.
- Day trips run year-round; Pompeii in July is hot with little shade, so the earliest departure is the right one.
How to save
- Compare the official site’s sale prices with Tiqets and GetYourGuide for the same trip; Green Line discounts its own site often.
- The one-run ticket is the cheapest way to see the loop if you do not plan to get off.
- A 24-hour ticket bought at 15:00 covers the next morning too; do not buy 48 hours for a day and a half.
- Under-18s and EU 18–25s pay less at the Colosseum and Forum regardless of how they arrive; do not buy attraction-plus-bus bundles unless the entry price is one you would pay anyway.
Who it suits and who should skip it
Green Line suits budget travellers, anyone staying near Termini, first-time visitors who want a lap of the centre on day one, and families who need a sit-down between sights. Skip it if commentary matters to you (Big Bus), if you want the shortest wait at every stop (City Sightseeing), or if your Rome is Trastevere and Monti, where no bus goes. For day trips, Green Line is a fair budget option for Pompeii; for Florence, take the train.
Booking checklist
- Confirm the exact departure stop on your voucher; Via Farini 16 is the office, not always the bus stop.
- Choose the ticket length by the hours you will actually ride, and note the daily ticket ends with the last bus.
- Bring your own earphones as a backup; the single-use headphones are basic.
- For day trips, be at the meeting point 15 minutes before 7:15 and bring water and a hat for Pompeii.
- Keep the mobile ticket ready; the assistant scans it as you board.
